“Evie Diaz, correct?” the short, stocky man with wide brown eyes and crazy white hair asked.

The door shut quickly behind me, as soon as I entered the room that had white walls and clean, shiny floors.

“I’m Cahner.” He eyed me from head to toe, extending his hand.

“I’m, I guess you could say, a professor here for all the new agents.

“They usually don’t perform testing on humans but I guess Seren has been feeling gracious lately,” he joked.

“Testing?” I asked lifting a brow.

Cahner let out a grunt and turned away from me.

“You’re a teacher?” I asked, moving to take a seat.

Cahner headed to the far end of the room, holding a finger up.

“Yes and no but my job is to help you understand how you use the vast reach of your skill set and then to report back. I guess I’m technically here to monitor your progress in everything they would like you to be taught.

“You are the only human onboard the SS Everest, at the moment, Evie.”

The smart board across the room was covered in numbers and words written in a strange language, I didn’t understand.

“It’s Iult,” Cahner said with a smile. “It’s the language of the Lyra beings. I think Luke wanted you to learn it for whatever reason, Evie.”

“I’m not sure if I can. I know Luke signed me up for advanced mathematics but I must warn you my memory and my number skills have never been that great.”

He chuckled and dropped his head to look at the papers in front of him. “I think you will be fine, Evie.”

Waiting patiently in my seat, I observed him mumble to himself for a while before taking a seat in front of a sleek computer screen.

“Sorry we are late, Cahner,” a man and a woman said to Cahner as they entered the room finding a seat.

“I do have a job to do here and I can’t do it if you don’t show up on time,” Cahner snapped, running a hand through his bushy hair.

“Is that the human?” the woman whispered to the man, who only nodded keeping his head facing in Cahner’s direction. I returned my gaze ahead to face Cahner.

“Evie, these two here are new agents but you will learn together. Most of the skills I will be teaching you they might already know and vice versa but you will take it all in regardless.” Cahner smirked.

“There is nothing she could teach me,” I heard the woman mutter.

I let out a deep breath. This really is like high school.

Cahner erased the numbers written on the smart board and began. I massaged the sore skin on my forearm, lifting the sleeve of my jumpsuit to scratch it. I rubbed it quickly, pushing my sleeve down, attempting to ignore the itchy ache.

“Mathematics is the language of the universe.” Cahner chuckled. “There are no language barriers when it relates to mathematics. It is a language in itself.”

“I’m sorry. Should I be taking notes?”

Cahner shook his head vigorously...impatiently. “No, Evie. You just need to listen.
